Sehzade Cihangir was born in 1531 in the Ottoman Palace as the son of Sultan Suleyman and Hurrem Sultan. He was the last son of Hurrem and the one who needed most care because he suffered from a hunchback and was therefore a weak sehzade, during his lifetime he never had his own Harem or a governing function within the Ottoman Empire, while most of his brothers were mocking his condition, he loved his brother Sehzade Mustafa the most and was close with him inspite of having different mothers.

Sehzade Cihangir died in 1553 in Aleppo, shortly after witnessing the execution of his brother the same year. Sehzade Mustafa was summoned to his fathers tent where he was executed as a result of a conspiracy by Hurrem Sultan and Rustem Pasa, reported is that Sultan Suleyman forced Sehzade Cihangir to witness the death of Sehzade Mustafa, telling him that this is the punishment for everyone who betrays him. Sehzade Cihangir loved his brother Mustafa very much and was traumatised by the death of his brother, short after he became very ill and died while travelling.

Sultan Suleyman was devastated by the death of Sehzade Cihangir and named a neighbourhood in Istanbul after his son Cihangir, he is buried next to his brother Sehzade Mehmet.
